Q. Why is it possible to type into some PDF forms and not in others? Is there any way to fill out all PDF forms on the computer without having to print them out?
A. Some PDF files are created to accept and save the text you type in on your computer. These interactive PDF files are typically referred to as “fillable,” and they can be made with several programs, including Adobe Acrobat or Microsoft Word. Static or “flat” forms that do not accept text input are often scans of paper documents or files intended for printing.
But even if a form is flat, you may be able to add your own text using different programs.
Although you can add comments and notes to files, the free Adobe Reader software cannot enter and save text on its own unless the form was created to be fillable. People with the full Adobe Acrobat program, though, can use the Typewriter option. In recent versions of Acrobat, under the Tools menu on the right side of the screen, go to the Content menu and select “Add or Edit Text Box” to get to the Typewriter tool, then click into the form fields and start typing.

The full version of Adobe Acrobat XI Pro costs $450 and even though a free 30-day trial is available to download, there are other ways to fill in flat PDF forms. In many cases, Mac users can use the free Preview app that comes with OS X; the app can often recognize text fields in forms and includes text annotation tools, although some users report having to resave the file as a PDF so other programs can see the text.
Plenty of other third-party PDF-editing apps are around the web. Some options include PDF-XChange Editor (free to try, $44 for the full version), the free Foxit Reader or Nitro PDF Reader for Windows, or the $8 PDF Form Filler for Mac. /free-beginners-program-for-recording-music-mac-6851/.
Q. For the last two years, I used the Intuit TurboTax app on my iPad to prepare my taxes. But I notice there is no app this year. Do I have to go back to doing them on my PC?
A. According to representatives from Intuit, the version of the program now in the App Store, TurboTax 2013, is the current edition of the software. The app was updated in early January with the new iOS 7 look and other enhancements for users ready to file their returns for the 2013 tax year.
After downloading or updating the TurboxTax 2013 app, it offers to transfer your tax data from the previous year to save time. The app is free to try, but there is a charge of about $30 to actually file a federal return, and additional fees for state returns apply.
TIP OF THE WEEK Phishing scams, those deceptive email messages that try to trick users into revealing personal information, are a regular online threat. Alerting your webmail provider to the fraudulent messages has gotten easier, as many services include built-in tools to report phishing scams.
In Yahoo Mail, turn on the checkbox next to the message and under the Spam menu at the top of the mailbox window, select “Report as phishing scam.” In Microsoft’s Outlook.com, select the message in the Inbox window, and under the Junk menu at the top of the screen, select “Phishing scam.” In Google’s Gmail, with the message open on screen, click on the menu arrow next to the Reply button and choose “Report phishing” from the list. Apple’s iCloud webmail does not have a dedicated menu for alerting the company to phishing, but suggests forwarding the mail to [email protected]J.D. BIERSDORFER
You can't fill out or save a PDF form in Adobe Reader.
To resolve this issue, use one of the following solutions.
Solution 1: If the PDF doesn't contain form fields, enable the Typewriter tool
Enable the Typewriter tool on the PDF.
- With Adobe Acrobat:
Note: You must have at least one Acrobat Professional client installed.- Open the PDF in Acrobat Professional.
- Choose Tools > Typewriter > Enable Typewriter tool in Adobe Reader.
- Save the PDF.
- With Reader Extensions Server:
Note: Make sure that you have a Reader Extensions server installed in your organization.- Go to the ReaderExtensions server portal (http://[servername]:[port]/ReaderExtensions).
- Upload the PDF file.
- Fill out the PDF form.
- Save the resulting PDF to your computer.
- With Adobe Acrobat:
Open the PDF in Adobe Reader and choose Tools > Typewriter to access the Typewriter tool.
Use the Typewriter tool to type characters on top of the PDF content.
Note: The Typewriter tool is only available for static PDF files, not for dynamic files, as it is part of the commenting functionality.
Solution 2: To save form data that you enter into PDF form fields, upgrade to Adobe Reader XI
Adobe Reader XI allows saving form data to the PDF.
Solution 3: For Adobe Reader X or earlier, ask the form author to enable the appropriate PDF rights using Reader Extensions Server
Note: The form author needs to have Reader Extensions Server installed in their organization to complete these steps.
- Go to the ReaderExtensions server portal (http://[servername]:[port]/ReaderExtensions).
Select the Usage Rights you want to apply to the PDF (you need Form Fill-In if you want to complete the PDF form and save the data).
Note: Reader Extensions Server is a LiveCycle product that's deployed in an enterprise environment. Therefore, this solution isn't cost-effective if you only want to enable a handful of forms or PDFs.
To make and save changes to a PDF file, you need a license for Adobe Acrobat. Changes that normally require Adobe Acrobat include entering text, saving a PDF form, and adding comments.
