Return to the Roots or RttR is an open source add-on type of remake of The Settlers II. This means it requires the original game files in order to work as Ubisoft did not give Settlers Freaks (the group developing RttR) a permission to redistribute the files. This means you need The Settlers II: Gold Edition for RttR to work.

Return to the Roots supports multiple operating systems, being playable on Windows 7, Vista & XP as well as Mac OS X and Linux. RttR adds a few features from limiting the total amount of catapults a player can build to fully working Internet multiplayer. Playing in Internet Lobby requires you to register at RttR forums, but you can also setup Direct IP games. AI is also in development, but the main attraction at the moment is the multiplayer. There is no single player campaign at the moment.

Settlers Freaks is always interested of new developers, and there are other kind of interesting projects such as “New People” based on Babylonians that needs working hands with graphics. There is also some interest at creating new “Settlers II like” graphics and sounds, but at the moment of writing this there is not yet enough people to get this done anytime soon.

Description of The Settlers II: Gold Edition

The Settlers 2 is a good follow-up of the first game, with more possibilities, really incredible graphics and animations and a very low technical requirement when it was released (worked on a 486DX33). Some of the weaknesses: no real multiplayer (you had to play on a split screen with two mouses and share the keyboard) and only two speed for in-game time, making you wait just idling for 5 minutes sometime. Anyway, a top game remade in 3D in 2006: The Settlers II 10th Anniversary.

The Gold edition contains the original game and the Mission CD, which contains a new campaign, 12 new maps and an editor.

You should also check out Widelands, a free and open-source remake of The Settlers II.

Launchbox is just a launcher, you can put any DOSBox you want on it, I use SVN-Daum (mainly for the v-sync to avoid crazy screen tearing).

type 'setup' instead of 's2' in the steps above. (mine work with one of the blasters)
Game is a city builder with some basic combat. At the time it was 7or8/10, but its aged quite badly in terms of gameplay, now 4or5/10. Game is enjoyable, but mainly for nostalgic players.

Ladies and gentlemen, for those of you who need to use it in a more modern version of windows, you may need a 3rd party program. Dosbox is a game emulator that you must mount the image of the game onto. There is a link provided below in 'how to play abandonwares' that gives information on different emulators. For dosbox, all you must do is load the program, and you'll be given a 'dos' prompt. You must mount the image of the drive location of the games you'd like to play. For instance, if my games folder is located in c:games I would need to type
mount d c:games you then change directories by typing d: and the games you have will be in the folders assigned. To change directories within a drive, for instance, if the game WAS in c:gamess2g which is how settlers 2 comes, I'd change to d: and then type cd s2g and you're in the folder with the game, type s2 and the game comes up.
Other noteable button combos for dosbox are alt + enter will maximize the screen, and on most games ctrl+f12 speeds up and ctrl+f11 slows down. That's as generally comprehensive as I can be in a comment.
