Would-be digital artists in the market for a serious graphic tablet will no doubt face the common hurdle of the business: go cheap and sacrifice features or pay big for their long-term investment, especially if you have an eye for Wacom’s professional-grade offerings. However, there are options for designers on budgets if you’re willing to look outside the box for a relatively affordable no-nonsense digital board.
Though they’re most famous for cables and A/V components on the cheap, Monoprice is determined to help you fulfill those artistic fantasies without breaking the bank with their 12×9″ Graphic Drawing Tablet (model the MP1290-A1). At less than half the cost of competing tablets, there’s plenty to like here and few compromises, though just how critical these compromises will be depends entirely on your level of expertise and expectations.
Let’s start with the appearance, as the MP1290-A1 is definitely a purpose-based device from the feel to absolute functionality. Compared to the Intous5’s soft matte texture Monoprice’s Drawing Tablet is also in donned in black but with a plastic finish that’s quite hard to the touch. The actual working area comes with a removable textured screen cover that features preset (and adjustable) keyboard and file shortcuts (such as Open, Copy/Paste, and three openly customizable keys) that sits on top while the rest of the space is dedicated to whatever canvas or window is present onscreen.
At best, it resembles a bigger Intuos2 model. To reduce wrist strain the tablet is designed at a 15-degree angle and adjustable to 30-degrees thanks to included tabs that can be removed and slid between notches sculptured into the base of the legs. These tabs, while helpful, feel pretty cheap and I wouldn’t suggest putting too much pressure on them (or misplacing them, as they detach from the tablet completely).

The internal features are just as focused in giving you the essentials needed for most design work. You’ll get a respectable 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity at 4000 LPI (lines per inch), more than fine by any standard. What isn’t standard though is stroke angle detection, which means that this tablet can’t take full advantage of the current Photoshop’s selection of mixer brushes and bristle tips. Fortunately, strength and point accuracy are calculated for finer linework.
As for the pen itself the simple rubberized look conceals active signal technology, which means that a single AAA battery is required to actually make it work, while the form factor is a bit bulkier and only works if a signal if detected by the tablet.
We’ve spent a week of quality time using the MP1290-A1 and came away with two conclusions. First, while the tablet works admirably in capable hands, the removable cover screen on the working area felt a bit too textured. This proved annoying as I prefer quick and uninterrupted strokes, and if you’ve been spoiled by softer tablets drawing on this tablets will take some getting used to if your work involves quick movements.
A second issue involves the hardware itself, which is essentially a rebranded UC-Logic tablet (a third-party supplier), meaning additional driver support isn’t handled by Monoprice – an issue you’ll have solve alone if you happen to lose the included installation software. Not only that but Wacom and UC-Logic devices don’t play together on the same computer so dual-users better be prepared to uninstall and install drivers if you encounter conflict issues.

Fortunately, operating-system compatibility was solid on our Windows 8 test machine and Monoprice promises Mac OS compatibility as well, so results may vary.
Monoprice’s 12×9″ Graphic Drawing Tablet is a fine choice for those digital artists looking for a quality graphic tablet that can handle most design work and a viable alternative to the more expensive Wacom choices – at least for most users. A respectable 1024 levels of pressure sensitivity at 4000 LPI make this ideal for beginners on a budget, though advanced users may stumble over issues such as reduced compatibility with Photoshop’s more advanced features and a cheaper build quality. Driver support is spotty and may be a long term issue. But these can be (mostly) forgiven if you’re wanting to graduate to a professional tablet and really don’t want to pay the premium of recent Wacom offerings like the Intuos lineup. Recommended.
